Early Reading
Here at Severne Primary School we strive to make the children we teach passionate about reading and encourage them to understand the lifelong pleasure that reading can bring.
The teaching and enjoyment of reading is developed across our school in a way that develops curiosity, interest and above all a delight in reading for all pupils. Phonics is delivered through the DFE’S approved Bug Club Phonics program, It’s principles and practice are followed across EYFS, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two (If the assessment of a specific child’s achievement deems this necessary). The Bug Club lessons are delivered daily through ability grouping and is planned and delivered each morning in Reception and Year One. Year Two complete a discrete 20-minute phonic lesson delivered daily in the morning.
Assessment is frequent and ongoing, so gaps are addressed quickly and parents receive regular updates on their child’s progress. It is a statutory requirement that towards the end of Year One, children take a phonic screening test, those who do not meet the threshold in the test, will be required to take the test again in Year 2.
